Re: studio ghibli
I think they're awesome, though I personally prefer the newer ones for the superior animation. I love how the foreground is always really cartoon-y, but the backgrounds are always excellently rendered.

There's a sense of whimsy in Ghibli movies that I really like, they are also vastly more accesible for people. My girlfriend hates japanese animation but loves Spirited Away.

Howl's moving castle and Porco Rosso are superb animation.

Re: studio ghibli
They can be a little cute-sy though, I must admit. But there's something so energetic and innocent about them, you'd have to be a hardcore cynic not to get SOMETHING out of them. I'm not a massive fan of anime per se, but I'll defend Ghibli to the death. Did you know there's a Ghibli museum in Tokyo?

I was just going to say how much I love Totoro. And yeah, that's not even a questionrastari wrote:now that i'd like to see, p.s i like some of their older stuff my neighbour toroto for example and i'm guessing we're in agreement about best director
Did anyone see the very latest one? By his son? I have no idea whether or not it's meant to be as good as its predecessors but I've heard mixed reviews.

the last 30 minutes of is some of the most saddening/depressing viewing i've ever seen. an amazing film.
Princess Mononoke is s*** though, don't watch it.

Re: studio ghibli
I thought Princess Mononoke was quite good and grave of the fireflies was probably the best anime film i have ever seen.
